As SVOD options grow, Australians grow more irked with ad loads on catch-up TV

The over-the-top and SVOD virus is spreading across Australia with record-setting subscription numbers and usage figures being tossed around like rugby balls at a barby.

But, consumers are finding there may be a price to pay for ditching more traditional appointment-based TV: Recurring ads and ad loads on free catch-up TV services.

While the TV set is expected to be the main source of entertainment viewing through 2020, smartphone use for video viewing in expected to soar, nearly doubling the numbers of users worldwide.

A new report said the number of devices users watch also is expected to nearly double as tablets and PCs join smartphones as common viewing devices.

The data, from Digital TV Research, suggests emerging markets in APAC will have the greatest impact.

Global online TV and video revenues are forecast to exceed $42.3 billion in 2020, an increase of more than 123% over expected 2014 revenues of $19 billion, and a whopping 968% increase from 2010’s $3.96 billion.

The kicker? Those figures are only for online and TV revenues delivered over fixed broadband networks for 51 countries... more on that later.

Comcast is continuing to aggressively add value to its Xfinity TV Go play, announcing today that it had added 18 live streaming channels to its TV Everywhere app.

The operator said customers now have access to A&E, Bravo, Cooking Channel, DIY Network, E!, Food Network, HGTV, HISTORY, mun2, Oxygen, Sprout, STARZ, Syfy, TBS, TNT, Travel Channel, truTV and USA Network through the Xfinity TV Go app, bringing its total live streaming lineup to 53 channels.
