AT&T pushing 5G mobile tech to support rapid DirecTV Now expansion

Think AT&T is looking at its DirecTV Now as a complementary service to its satellite-delivered DirecTV service or wired service U-verse TV? Think again.

AT&T at CES this week previewed its 5G wireless technology, and said it would begin testing the tech this year with its DirecTV Now service as a major piece of the delivery matrix.

Hulu’s entry into live streaming will launch within the next few months for less than $40/mo., according to Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins, who also announced the service had reached a deal with CBS for its live content to go along with ABC and Fox.

Missing still is NBCUniversal, which, interestingly, is one of Hulu’s owners.

Nearly a third of all consumers in six key world markets are planning to take an SVOD subscription but, according to a new report, 50% of new subscribers will cancel their subscriptions within six months.

The report, from subscription, billing and CRM specialist Paywizard, also says about one-in-eight existing SVOD subscribers will take an additional pay-TV subscription.

AT&T today detailed its new DirecTV Now streaming offer, targeting the growing number of cord cutters and cord nevers in the United States who are looking for alternatives to the traditional pay-TV landscape.

The service will launch Wednesday and promises “on-demand and live programming from many networks” in addition to premium add-ons and some significant gaps (notably CBS and Showtime).

Sling TV is rolling out a limited cloud DVR beta program for Roku users, with features that include conflict-free recording, the ability to pause, rewind or fast-forward recorded content, and simple space management.

The launch, currently by invitation only, is scheduled for December, and Sling TV said it will have support for additional devices in the coming months.

Earlier this month, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson hinted that the company’s new streaming service, which is on track to be deployed before the end of the year, would have slim margins and an aggressive pricing structure.

Ad-supported Internet television service Pluto TV, looking to aggressively expand its brand to Europe, has raised $30 million in a Series B funding round led by Germany’s ProSieben and Scripps Networks.

Pluto TV previously raised $13M with investors like US Venture Partners, Sky, Chicago Ventures, Universal Music Group, United Talent Agency and Pritzker Group.

It’s happening v-e-r-y- s-l-o-w-l-y, but PlayStation Vue is expanding the number of markets where it’s offering live CBS programing. The latest to join the Cloud TV play include Atlanta, Hartford/New Haven, Conn.; Kansas City; Phoenix; and St. Louis. The new markets – all Meredith Corp. affiliates – means that there are 39 markets with live broadcast delivered over the streamer.

DirecTV Now, AT&T’s soon-to-launch streaming service, is one of the centerpieces of the telco’s mobile-centric strategy that it hopes will turn the company from one that is based on wireline services to one that is far more wireless oriented.

The soon-to-launch service will offer about 100 channels and have a price point that is “very, very aggressive,” CEO Randall Stephenson said during Goldman Sachs' Communacopia conference.

PlayStation Vue. Sling TV. Hulu. Amazon. DirecTV. Google. Maybe even an entry from Apple. All are potential players in the virtual MVPD (V-MVPD) market, a market that at least one researcher believes could top 15 million U.S. subscribers by 2020, possibly going higher as technology and consumer experiences improve.
