Increased demand for value-added services, including high-definition and video on demand, is helping to drive the Latin American pay-TV market, new research says.

The number of subscribers in the region are expected to exceed 86 million by 2019, a 54% increase from 56 million in 2013, said Frost & Sullivan, hitting a household penetration rate of just less than 60% for all forms of pay-TV service delivery.

C-Suite’s Jeffrey Hayzlett launches an online, on-demand business TV network

You may know him from C-Suite with Jeffrey Hayzlett on Bloomberg TV, but get ready to see a lot more of the former Eastman Kodak CMO as he launches a new over-the-top, on-demand video play, C-Suite TV.

His report on Bloomberg has been on weekly since October 2013. Hayzlett says he’s not discounting the broadcast show’s success, but there’s a lot more opportunity for an OTT play.

German pay-TV revenues reached €2.05 billion in 2013, an all-time record for pay-TV and VOD revenues, a new report says.

Verband Privater Rundfunk und Telemedien reported that the outlook if for another banner year in 2014 with revenues reaching €2.3 billion, an increase of just more than 12% Y/Y. In 2012, German pay-TV revenues reached €1.89 billion.

VPRT said German operators saw subscriber numbers grow to 6.4 million by the end of 2013, 50% growth over a five-year period.

A rose by any other name? One of the biggest problems TV Everywhere has could be the fact that consumers are only vaguely familiar with what it is.

Only 19% of pay-TV subscribers said they had “strong” or “pretty good” familiarity with the term “TV Everywhere, although nearly half (49%) say they’ve definitely heard of it once the term was explained to them.

Yet another report – this one from Nielsen -- showing that consumers who use VOD services are also likely to watch more linear TV than those who don’t use video-on-demand services.

In its Q1 2014 Cross-Platform Report, Nielsen said users of all ethnicities watch about 20% more TV -- live or time-shifted --  than non-VOD users.

Cancelled ‘Community’ finds new home on Yahoo… for now

Netflix helped jonesing fans of “Arrested Development” and “The Killing,” after those series were cancelled, now Yahoo Screen has scored its own cult coup with a deal to buy 13 new episodes of “Community,” the cancelled NBC sitcom that has been the source of multiple rumored revivals on Hulu, Crackle et al.

Sony Pictures TV and Yahoo announced a deal for a full season, 13 episodes, of the show, which was cancelled after five seasons.

Google Play Movies continues to roll out into new markets, adding 21 more countries in the past week.

The service, which allows access on any connected device -- including iPads and iPhones -- just launched in some pretty appealing markets (and a few that just round out regional availability). The service can also be cast to connected TVs using Google’s Chromecast device.
