Verizon’s deal for Volicon has a decidedly mobile flavor

Verizon is adding yet another piece to its Verizon Digital Media Services stack in an attempt to move up market in the Cloud TV space, announcing it had acquired broadcast monitoring and content archiving company Volicon. No terms for the deal were made public.

Verizon is hoping Volicon’s technology will give it a “seamless option” to offer broadcasters that are looking to take broadcast feeds and channels directly to cloud-based delivery models. The company, founded in 2005, facilitates content creation – including highlights and clips -- and repurposing for the Web and social media, VOD/OTT content preparation, linear production, compliance monitoring (loudness, closed captioning), ad verification, competitive analysis, quality-of-service/experience monitoring (QoS/QoE), and archiving. It has some 1,200 customers worldwide in broadcast, cable and IPTV sectors, as well as some deployments with governments. It counts Disney, Time Warner Cable, ESPN, Viacom, HBO and Canal+ among its customers.

Verizon likely is hoping Volicon makes it easier to deliver a true mobile video service to its customers.

 It’s Go90 video offering has been slow to grow since it launch, and the company has repeatedly said it plans to expand the amount of premium content available to mobile subscribers.

Volicon will help it in that regard, a must-have for Verizon as it looks to provide an alternative to its stalled FiOS TV service.

A report from Digital TV Research this week forecast that traditional pay TV in North America would continue to see subscriber declines through the end of the decade and said penetration would decline to 80% as the number of cord cutters and cord nevers continued to grow.

More critical to the industry is an expected 12% decline in pay-TV revenue over the same period.

Eli Warsawski, CEO of Volicon, said, the deal with Verizon aligns with his company’s vision.

“This undertaking represents a strategic opportunity for our products to evolve and for our customers to greatly benefit,” he said.

And, it may just help make Go90 the success Verizon needs it to be.
