NBCUniversal will be the exclusive U.S. seller for open advertising inventory on Apple’s News app and will work with Apple to develop new advertising products so marketers and publishers can better take advantage of the platform.
Apple’s News app comes pre-installed on all iOS devices and will give NBCU access to a massive user base estimated at more than 70 million active monthly users.
As part of the deal, NBCU will be responsible for selling the ad inventory for publishers on News that the publishers themselves haven’t already sold. Publishers generally sell their own inventory and only used Apple when they had excess inventory.
NBCU will take some portion of the 30% cut from ad sales that usually went to Apple.
NBCUniversal will create a new, dedicated sales group focusing on developing strategic opportunities and new products around the app.
