ISP Cogent calls OTT ecosystem’s long-term winner

Count Internet Service Provider (ISP) Cogent as one of the video service providers that believe over-the-top delivery will be the long-term winner in the battle for eyeballs because “it’s cheaper, it is affordable, it is time shiftable and it allows you a much greater choice in content.”

In an interview with FierceTelecom, Cogent CEO and Founder Dave Schaeffer said he believes OTT is becoming more dominant because, “On the supply side… we’re seeing a lot more content owners willing to make their content available over the top.”

And on the demand side, consumer uptake has shifted from an early adopter to mainstream.

“Grandma and grandpa are OK with over-the-top as opposed to (when) it was a specialty service,” Schaeffer said.

Cogent supplies bandwidth to Netflix and a number of other OTT players through its NetCentric business.

He told FierceTelecom that nearly 90% of the global bits carried on the Internet today are video, adding that more than 90% of the incremental bits also are video.

The average viewer watches about 305 minutes a day, he said, only about 10% is currently delivered over-the-top, a number he expects to grow dramatically.

Stay tuned.

Growing consumer spending power and affordable multiplay service bundle are fueling the adoption of prepaid satellite pay-TV services (DTH) in Latin America, especially among consumers who previously were not able to afford service offerings.

That new class of subscribers, in turn, is influencing operators to invest in expanded networks, especially fiber-to the-home (FTTH).
