StarHub adds DreamWorks Animation, on-demand to pay-TV and OTT offering

DreamWorks Animation has added another partner in APAC, Singapore operator StarHub is adding the DWA channel to its pay-TV service and its on-demand option.

DWA last year deployed in Thailand and Malaysia.

The DreamWorks Channel is set to launch March 3, and will be available in HD and include English and Mandarin language options.

Subscribers can access its curated collection of hit Hollywood feature films, the Hallmark Hall of Fame library and Feeln-originals including its latest series, Breaking Bread with Brooke Burke, on the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick and select Fire tablets.

AWS acquiring Elemental Technologies for rumored $500M

More consolidation in the digital video space as start-up video processing specialist Elemental Technologies today announced it was being acquired by Amazon Web Services.

The deal is expected to close in Q4 and, while no financial details were released, published reports say the price likely was in the $500 million range.

Industry alliance targets new royalty-free, open source 4K codec

Looking to get the jump on developing an open-source, royalty-free codec specification that will easily handle 4K content, a Who’s Who of Internet companies -- including Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel Corporation, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix – have announced as founding members of the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia).

The seven say the group wants to deliver an open, royalty-free and interoperable solution for the next-gen of video delivery.

Amazon Fire TV expands titles with Popcornflix, Funny or Die, Fox News and more

Amazon has continued to expand its Fire TV franchise, adding more than 600 channels, apps and games to the device in the past three months.

Although the content add has been relatively thin – it now gives users access to Popcornflix, Funny Or Die, Candy Crush Saga, and Fox News -- Amazon also made a deal for the GameFly streaming service, which is available exclusively for streaming media devices on Amazon Fire TV.

In all-cash deal, Akamai acquires Octoshape to up streaming abilities

Akamai has acquired multicast video technology specialist Octoshape in an all-cash deal that gives Akamai more insight into optimizing streaming – and especially live streaming -- for over-the-top (OTT) content and Internet Protocol television (IPTV) solutions.

The Copenhagen-based firm has been around since 2003 and specializes in video delivery using multicast technology over unmanaged/best effort broadband networks.
