Spot the Difference: News Production vs. News Workflow
Wednesday, February 13, 2019
Today the news deadline is a continuous now. It takes powerful workflow automation to meet those every-single-moment deadlines.

Remember when we used to sit down every night to watch the news, or read the paper? If you do, a little reminiscence. If you don’t, a little history!

Broadcast news, six o’clock, breakfast news, lunchtime news: all were fixed programmes in the TV schedule. Producers knew the deadlines and had time to compile a compelling story and content.  The news trucks ran their satellite feeds, interviews were edited or ready to go live, archive footage was dug up, scripts were prepped. And the teaser to keep you watching to the end? The weather forecast!

Distribution was simpler then: as a broadcaster, you had one or more TV channels, and that’s where your programs were played out to and transmitted. Then satellite and DTT came along, a little more complex, but still with linear playout, all manageable and with fixed schedules.

Fast forward to... now. News programs may look the same, but the expectation of when and where they should be consumed is unrecognisable compared to the 80’s and 90’s. News source and consumption is a highly complex supply chain where speed to consumption has to be almost instantaneous.

And with social media, news consumers are increasingly also sources! Human with smartphone takes video of newsworthy (sometimes) content, applies hashtags and sends to one or more of favoured social media channels, usually in an attempt to increase their popularity with the world.

Going back 20 years again: what happened during the 1990’s was digitisation of analogue activities that were often manual. Turning the world into 1’s and 0’s was going to save us time (and our sanity). Amazing things have happened in digital video production, but one thing was lost: the runner. The result? Siloed production activity that leads to inefficiency, which gets worse as complexity increases.

You may have the most awesome news production system on the planet, but how do you get that content into the system, get it talking to asset management and other systems, and publish or syndicate the content out to all the different destinations your content needs to get to. In multiple packages? In almost zero time?

This is where we have to spot the difference. News production is not news workflow automation. News Production is about getting the story together. News Workflow Automation is getting to the consumer, fast.

You need a new runner. The runner was the integration layer, connecting systems using video tapes in transit. An agile automation system! You need a runner for the 21st century that can:

  • Publish content to multiple destinations faster than you can make the next coffee
  • Pull together, wrap up and send out all needed data with those assets
  • Talk to news production, asset management, editing, publishing, CMS, application systems alike, in their language
  • Keep up: there is no way this runner can be a stick in the mud when it comes to the next social platform or syndication partner: adapt or die

What if your news environment had a runner like that? One that worked seamlessly, without coffee breaks. Just imagine for a moment what that would be worth in time saved, reliability, speed to market, analytics, and agility.
