Report: Is Viu on track for 10M users in SE Asia?
Sunday, December 4, 2016

Viu, the ad-supported OTT service from telecom PCCW, may be on track to hit 10 million subscribers by the end of 2017.

The company last week reported it had hit the 4 million mark and announced it was deploying in the Philippines, a market with some 30 million potential OTT users.

The service, which launched about a year ago, also has deployed in Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Rethink Technology Research believes the service, which has a strong library of popular Korean TV fare, says Viu’s traction and rate of uptake could inhibit the growth of Netflix in Southeast Asia.

The two, however, likely are competing for different market and, while overlapping in those four countries, likely compete for different customers. In addition, it’s become increasingly obvious that more users are signing up for multiple services.

Stay tuned.
