Mountain View, CA., April 22, 2009 - Ooyala, Inc., a leading online video platform provider, successfully debuted live video playback using the Ooyala Video Player. The player was deployed for 21 hours of real-time video programming for two independent events April 18-19th, 2009; Earth Day on the National Mall and the AVP Crocs Tour Riverside Open. Viewers worldwide watched the webcasts via the player and a live stream provided by the Highwinds content delivery network (CDN). The live capability highlights the increasingly advanced feature set available with Ooyala's Flash-based video player, which is quickly gaining adoption by media companies and small/medium web businesses globally.
"Live video is in-line with our goal to help content owners syndicate and monetize all types of video. With online video, content owners are able to hold and manage web conferencing, cover live events and get content online faster," said Ooyala CEO, Bismarck Lepe.
For the Earth Day on the National Mall webcast, which aired April 19th on myspace.com, greenapplefestival.com, and earthdaytv.net, Ooyala collaborated with Marc Scarpa, veteran director and producer of live interactive media, and partners Arqiva and Highwinds. Arqiva provided satellite news gathering trucks, transponder time, teleport services, and live encoding. Highwinds flawlessly carried the video stream across its content delivery network to users in 48 states and 17 countries outside the United States.
"Ooyala's live Flash player reflects their continued innovation in video publishing solutions," said Josh Gagliardi, Highwinds' CTO. "We were able to brand the player in just a few clicks using their Backlot portal, and streaming over our content delivery network with the Ooyala player has proven to be both simple and robust."
Ooyala also partnered with Highwinds for live coverage of the AVP event. For two full days, over 10,000 volleyball fans watched close to a dozen matches via the Ooyala Video Player. The AVP currently uses Ooyala's Backlot platform as their video publishing solution for http://avp.com.
In early April, Ooyala began rolling out the new video player to customers of its comprehensive video platform, Backlot. With the latest version of the player, Ooyala is able to offer the lightest, fastest, most feature-rich player on the market today. The video player is used by an average of over 30 million unique users, monthly.
