Discovery Communications, Austria’s ORF sign Olympic Games pact

How valuable are sports to broadcasters? Well, Discovery Communications is continuing its full-court press on rights for much of Europe, this week announcing a new long-term partnership with ORF, the public broadcaster in Austria. The deal will ensure every event of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be available for Austrian audiences across multiple screens.

 The deal gives ORF an exclusive sublicense from Discovery free-to-air audio visual and radio rights for its channels, for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games and 2020 Olympic Games. The sublicense package will include selected digital rights to the content ORF broadcasts on its linear TV channels.

Discovery’s Eurosport will hold pay rights to air all Olympic Games action on its German language channels available in Austria, as well as across all digital, OTT and mobile platforms.

“We have secured a groundbreaking Olympic partnership for viewers in Austria, ensuring that the Olympic Games remains accessible to the broadest possible audience and delivered to the highest standard,” said Kasia Kieli, President of Discovery Networks Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa. “The agreement is a perfectly example of how Discovery will deliver more coverage of the Olympic Games, across more screens than ever before.”

About 78% of Austria’s population watched the last Summer Games from London in 2012, more than 5.6 million people. About 5.9 million people (81% of the population) watched the winter edition of 2014 in Sochi on television via ORF.

Last year, Discovery announced it had secured exclusive multimedia rights across 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018-2024 Olympic Games.

It currently has seven Olympic Games sublicensing agreements, following partnership deals with national broadcasters in Croatia (HRT), the Czech Republic (Ceska Televize), Finland (YLE), Ireland (RTE), Netherlands (NOS), and UK (BBC), all tailored individually to the broadcast market of each country.
