Indian pay-TV provider Tata Sky’s TV Everywhere service – which formerly cost consumers 90 cents a month – is now free to subscribers, a plan the company hinted at in November.
The “Everywhere TV” service gives users access to some 80 channels from the satellite provider, which can be streamed to iOS and Android mobile devices through an app. Tata Sky said the app works on both 3G and 4G networks, although 4G has limited deployment in the country. Users can adjust video quality to three different settings to make the best use of available service.
The service has been available since late 2013.
The bigger story, of course, is the availability of Netflix in India and how it will impact TV Everywhere and pay-TV service parents.
The SVOD service launched last week, part of a 130-country rollout that made headlines globally and made Netflix available in more than 190 countries.
In India, Netflix will be available for between $7.49 and $11.98, a pricey alternative to many services, but one that carries with it access to a wide array of content.
Everywhere TV came about as Tata’s own research showed more than 60% of its subscribers were watching video on smartphones and tablets either at home or at office.
The service provides live TV, catch up options, video on demand and a music service.
